first the horrible withdrawal.
It's a nightmare in the least of what happens when the drug is gone... then the calm, the recovery... recovery turns into emptiness along with the realization that NOTHING feels the same, nor comfortable at all. one is faced with their own self image and being without substance (substitute the noun) for the first time. life smacks them in the face with the fact that while they were puffing (substitute the verb) it only smoked over, glazed and painted a false picture, really never curing anything. WAKE UP....
in fact it only put them further from the truth of being whole and able to make it the world free of substance abuse. even a year after recovery with numerous bouts of depression, anger, blame. those who are with them walk through the same minefields of those ups and downs.
it hurts. it feels bad and terrible to be the addict. The same goes for those who are with them.
no matter what the steps of recovery are or how good they may be, it won't work unless the addict him/herself actually finds their way to heal the original "sin" or wound....
as is the co-dependent - who covers and protects the one who is recovering... same cycle only less the smoke and mirrors.
HONESTY. It requires total honesty with humility from the addict.
and a willingness for the one who is co-dependent to quit enabling.
